Japanese basics
Basic Japanese phrases
Forty phrases that cover a first conversation and a first trip: being polite, asking for things, finding your way, ordering, and saying that you do not understand. Each one is given as it is normally written (with kanji), in hiragana alone, in romaji and in English. If you can read hiragana, use the hiragana column: it is the honest version of the pronunciation.

Three patterns behind these phrases
- 〜です / 〜ます are the polite endings. Every sentence above uses them, which is exactly the register you want with strangers.
- 〜か at the end turns a sentence into a question, with no change of word order: いくらですか.
- 〜をください ("give me ...") and 〜をお願いします ("... please") work with any noun. The particle を is read o, not wo.
